Since 1997, a vignette requirement (vignette, sticker vignette, highway vignette, toll sticker, or also called "Pickerl") has applied in Austria to cover the costs of maintaining motorways and expressways.
A vignette is a mandatory proof for most motorways and road sections in Austria, which must be purchased and registered to the license plates of cars, motorhomes, and trucks (vehicles up to 3.5 t GVWR), or alternatively affixed as a sticker vignette ("Pickerl") to the windshield.
Basically, a distinction is made between sticker vignettes (so-called "Pickerl", highway vignette, or toll sticker) and digital vignettes. The vignette requirement applies to vehicles up to 3.5 t GVWR. GVWR stands for gross vehicle weight rating, i.e. how heavy your vehicle is including cargo. However, passengers are not included in the total weight.
The sticker vignette must be affixed to the windshield for cars, trucks, and motorhomes (vehicles up to 3.5 t GVWR) and later removed again.
For a motorcycle, the sticker vignette must be attached to a clearly visible and non-exchangeable part of the motorcycle (not on the fuel cap or saddlebags).
Purchasing a digital vignette is particularly convenient, and here’s why:
In Austria, the special toll is referred to as a route toll (formerly video toll) (Note: do not confuse with distance-based tolls). The special toll is charged for certain routes that are not subject to the vignette requirement or distance-based tolls. This means that even if you have purchased a vignette for using motorways or already paid the distance-based toll via the GO-Box, there are road sections where an additional fee applies. The special toll therefore applies to everyone who wants to use these particular routes.
While vehicle owners with a vignette can purchase a pass for the special toll, those who already pay distance-based tolls are recorded and billed through the GO-Box.
Special toll routes are often tunnels or mountain passes. Exceptions include the Landecker Tunnel and the Pfänder Tunnel, where no special toll is charged. For tunnels such as the Brenner or Karawanken Tunnel, a special toll applies. So if you pass through one of these tunnels, you must pay an additional fee.
It should also be noted that most special toll routes can only be accessed via vignette-required or distance-based toll roads. Therefore, it always makes sense to purchase a vignette or a GO-Box regardless of whether you intend to use a special toll route.
Whether you need to buy a vignette or a digital vignette for Austria depends on which motorways or road sections you drive during your trip.
Our Route Planner shows you the applicable combination of vignette and toll routes for your journey.
Since purchasing the digital vignette in our online shop does not require considering an 18-day waiting period before it becomes valid, you can buy it shortly before starting your trip. This offer applies exclusively to Austria.
Important: Do not start driving until the registration confirmation has been received!
No, the price of the digital vignette includes taxes. The tax is already included in our prices.
In general: Vehicles up to 3.5 t GVWR are subject to the vignette requirement, while vehicles over 3.5 t GVWR must pay a distance-based toll. The amount of the distance-based toll depends, among other things, on the distance traveled. To record the distance traveled (distance-based toll), you must purchase a GO-Box. In addition to the vignette requirement and the distance-based toll, Austria also has special toll routes.
Motorcycles in Austria require a vignette.
As a car driver, you need a vignette for your vehicle and do not need to pay a distance-based toll, provided your car does not weigh more than 3.5 t GVWR. If your vehicle exceeds 3.5 t GVWR, the vignette requirement no longer applies, and you must obtain a GO-Box for distance-based toll collection. This GO-Box must remain active even on toll-free (non-vignette/non-distance-based) roads.
Trailers are not subject to the vignette requirement in Austria. However, the weight of your towing vehicle, such as a car, is decisive.
The same rules apply to motorhomes as to other vehicle types. The vignette requirement applies to motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVWR. If your motorhome exceeds 3.5 t GVWR, the vignette requirement no longer applies, and you must pay the distance-based toll. For distance-based toll collection, you must purchase a GO-Box. This GO-Box must remain active even on toll-free (non-vignette/non-distance-based) roads.
As a truck driver, you need a vignette for your vehicle and do not need to pay a distance-based toll, provided your truck including cargo does not weigh more than 3.5 t GVWR. If your truck exceeds 3.5 t GVWR, the vignette requirement no longer applies, and you must obtain a GO-Box for distance-based toll collection. This GO-Box must remain active even on toll-free (non-vignette/non-distance-based) roads.
Yes. The digital vignette, like the sticker vignette (so-called "Pickerl", highway vignette, or toll sticker), is valid throughout Austria.
You can check whether your digital vignette is already or still valid free of charge on our subpage for validity verification.
Yes, the digital vignette, like the sticker vignette, is registered to and bound to the respective license plate.
Your digital vignette is valid once you receive the registration confirmation. Delivery usually takes just a few minutes. It is then recognized and accepted by the digital control devices on site.
The digital vignette is valid for the booked period. The 1-day vignette (validity: 1 calendar day, for the booked day) is valid for one day, the 10-day vignette for 10 days, the 2-month vignette for 2 months, and the annual vignette for a full calendar year. In addition, the annual vignette is valid from December 1 of the previous year until January 31 of the following year.
Anyone driving in Austria on motorways and certain road sections without a valid vignette in accordance with the vignette requirement must expect a fine. The fine is currently at least 120 EUR and can be as high as 3,000 EUR depending on the violation and the length of non-payment. If the replacement toll of 120 EUR is not paid immediately, this usually results in a report and a fine of at least 300 EUR. To check vignette validity, the police in Austria regularly conduct inspections.
