Driving on highways and expressways in Austria has been associated with costs for years. Drivers are required to purchase a vignette to use these essential roads. This regulation applies regardless of the newly introduced Fern Pass toll and represents an existing practice that is crucial for the maintenance and safety of the Austrian road network.
Starting in 2028, an important change will come into effect for drivers: the introduction of the Fern Pass toll in the Reutte district (Tyrol). This measure, which is particularly significant for travelers from the Allgäu region, brings a series of changes that we want to inform you about comprehensively here.
The new regulation stipulates that drivers must pay a fee of 14 euros for the route between Lermoos and Nassereith. This decision was announced by Tyrol's Governor Anton Mattle (ÖVP) and his deputy Georg Dornauer (SPÖ) in a press conference in Reutte.
The toll revenue will be used to finance a tunnel project that promises a significant improvement in traffic flow on the transit route. The estimated cost of the tunnel project is 160 million euros, and it is expected that travel time will be reduced by about three minutes through this measure.
Contrary to earlier considerations, there will be no exemption from the toll for local drivers due to the new road cost guidelines of the European Union. Instead, there will be a multi-trip card for frequent drivers.
To make the transition easier for you as a driver, we offer the option to register vignettes with different durations directly online. This service allows you to purchase the required vignette without waiting time and completely hassle-free, so you can continue your journey.
Two toll stations are planned in Nassereith and Blindsee, and the toll can also be paid electronically. Additionally, a day ticket is currently being discussed for drivers who want to travel the Fern Pass route back and forth on the same day. Particularly affected by the new toll are travelers and holidaymakers who use the Lermoos-Nassereith route on their way to Lake Garda or for excursions in the region.
