There has been heavy snowfall in Austria. While ski tourists and winter enthusiasts can enjoy the fresh snow, it also increases the risk of avalanches.
Road traffic has also been affected by the fresh snow, and several roads had to be closed, as more than half a meter of new snow has fallen in some areas. Extensive closures, and resulting traffic jams, occurred particularly on the Fernpassstraße B179.
Although sleet and snow rain are expected to continue, the roads can be very slippery, and further closures due to the weather cannot be ruled out.
The avalanche risk is rated at level 3 in many areas, and in higher regions above 2200 meters, it is even at level 4. Avalanche danger should be taken seriously, and even skiers should not underestimate it. Avoid snowed-in roads in the mountains, and consider taking a detour on safer roads without avalanche risks.
The snowfall is expected to decrease again starting Wednesday.
