The reason for the expected traffic chaos is the renovation of the Südosttangente (A23), one of the busiest roads in Austria. Approximately 230,000 vehicles pass the Prater High Road between the Prater interchange and Handelskai every day. This part will now be renovated starting Monday.
While the renovation work begins in the north, the emergency lane towards the south will be repurposed as a traffic lane. Traffic will be shifted to the right. In addition to the changed accessibility of the route, you should also expect other restrictions. These include closures of access ramps during the night and on weekends. To avoid confusion, a color coding system will be used.
The renovation work in the direction of the north will take place in three different phases. The first phase lasts ten weeks and takes place on the right side. After that, the construction site will focus on the middle for two weeks, during which the Handelskai exit will be closed for vehicles coming from the A23 and driving on the three left lanes. In the final phase, the construction site will move to the far left for one week.
Starting from 23.06.2025, the renovation will take place in the direction of the south. All renovations are expected to be completed by August 2026.
There will be a closure of the bypass ramp in the direction of Handelskai at the Prater interchange. In addition, there may be disruptions on the East Motorway (A4) between the Prater interchange and Schwechat. These restrictions are due to surface work and bridge repairs. Furthermore, traffic congestion is predicted at the on-ramp from the Vienna Outer Ring Expressway (S1) to the East Motorway (A4) towards Vienna. This traffic congestion will continue until the end of October 2025, as only one lane will be available.
During the renovation work, a speed limit of 60 km/h will apply. Compliance with the speed adjustment will be monitored through Section Control.
