Only last year, five tunnels of the Brentenberg Tunnel on the Tauern Motorway (A10) were renovated. However, one of the tunnel tubes now has to be closed until further notice due to a burned-out articulated lorry that crashed into the impact attenuator in front of the tunnel entrance. As a result, severe damage occurred along the first 120 meters of the tunnel, affecting, among other things, all safety installations, the tunnel vault, and the entrance area. This includes damage to the lighting, radio and fire detection cables, other technical safety systems, as well as the road surface itself. Fortunately, the driver suffered only minor injuries.
Despite the extensive damage, a temporary traffic solution is already being considered. A single-lane traffic management system is currently regarded as the best solution and is being planned. How long the repair work will take cannot yet be determined. Experts first need to assess whether the structural integrity of the tunnel ceiling has also been affected. For the time being, road users must divert to the federal road, where detours via Bischofshofen and Pfarrwerfen have already been set up.
Due to the fire and the resulting damage to the tunnel, traffic delays are to be expected. Please take these restrictions into account when planning your upcoming journey.
