Time and again, traffic blockades on the Brenner route result in kilometer-long traffic jams and long waiting times — much to the frustration of travelers. However, this issue is now set to be addressed to ensure smooth travel through the Brenner. The proposed solution is a planned digital slot system, which Bavarian Premier Markus Söder and Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker regard as a viable alternative. They are calling for the swift implementation of the slot system to relieve congestion on the Brenner route. Austria and Bavaria are currently awaiting approval from Italy, specifically from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, to make this system a reality through international cooperation.
The slot system was jointly developed by Bavaria, Tyrol, and South Tyrol. It will require mandatory booking of transit rights for truck drivers. This aims to control transit traffic through the Brenner in a targeted manner and reduce or prevent heavy congestion. The slot system enables the integration of a functioning traffic control strategy, offering relief to all road users through a coordinated approach. The idea is to shift truck traffic to off-peak hours, creating a true Digital Green Corridor.
We hope you have a relaxing trip and would like to remind you about the applicable toll regulations. Please note that the Brenner Tunnel falls under the special toll requirement (also called route-specific toll). You can find more information about special and route-specific tolls in our guide. Additionally, driving on Austrian roads requires a valid vignette. Use our route planner to better plan your trip and view the required toll products (like vignettes or special tolls). You can conveniently purchase your digital vignette from the comfort of your home and avoid the hassle of sticking and scraping off a physical vignette.
