Since March, several cases of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) have been identified in Hungary and Slovakia. The discovery of these cases has caused significant concern among farmers, not only in Slovakia and Hungary but also in Austria. As a result, measures are being implemented, and 23 border crossings to Hungary and Slovakia are being closed. Starting from Saturday (05.04.2025), an attempt to contain Foot-and-Mouth Disease is planned, which is expected to last until 20.05.2025.
The currently known border crossings to be closed are located in the districts of Neusiedl am See, Mattersburg, and Oberpullendorf. A full overview can be found on the website of the Chamber of Agriculture of Austria. To prevent unauthorized border crossings, the border points will be monitored with the help of the police. Major crossings like Nickelsdorf and Kittsee will remain open for the time being.
