The A9 Pyhrnautobahn is one of the busiest sections of highway in Styria and is located north of Graz. It is used daily by up to 50,000 vehicles. Therefore, the planned renovation work could significantly impact traffic. However, the work on the A9 is necessary.
The renovations will take place between the two Gratkorn tunnels and extend northward to the Deutschfeistritz junction. The 8-kilometer stretch will not only see the roadway and the associated ten bridges being renewed, but also an expansion of noise and environmental protection. The noise protection will be extended by an additional 500 meters. Furthermore, eight water protection systems will be installed in line with environmental protection efforts. The entire renovation work is planned to be carried out in two phases. The work between the two Gratkorn tunnels will be completed by the end of the year (December 2025), with the tunnels themselves unaffected. In the following year (2026), construction will begin for the stretch leading to the Deutschfeistritz junction.
The first phase started this week (17.03.2025) with the setup of the first of a total of seven traffic management phases. These phases aim to allow for ongoing traffic flow while ensuring that two lanes per direction remain usable despite the ongoing renovation work. Due to these new traffic management measures, different speed limits will apply. For safety reasons, the speed must not exceed 80 km/h.
