With the upcoming Christmas holidays, travelers should also expect an increased risk of traffic jams. Especially around Christmas, the roads get busier and anticipation for the upcoming ski trip grows. Longer traffic jams and travel times will mainly affect the period from 19/12/2025 to 11/01/2026. Even if it will likely be quieter on the roads on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve themselves, the days in between are expected to be much busier.
You should be prepared for longer journeys especially on 19 and 20 December. Increased travel traffic is expected on Friday afternoon. This volume is expected to peak on Saturday and ease again at the beginning of the week. In addition, 27 and 28 December are also expected to be very busy, as many winter sports enthusiasts will be heading off on ski vacations during this period. You should therefore expect traffic jams, especially in the direction of the Alps. The same applies on 2 and 6 January, when holidaymakers begin their return journey.
The following motorways in Germany have an increased risk of traffic jams on the way to the Alps and should be avoided if possible:
In Austria and Switzerland, increased traffic volumes are expected on these routes (towards the winter sports resorts):
These routes are prone to traffic jams in Switzerland and Italy:
Before you set off, make sure you are well prepared for winter weather conditions. Check that your vehicle has winter tyres with sufficient tread depth, that the windscreen washer system is topped up with antifreeze, and that all lights are working properly. You should also pack warm clothing and don’t forget a few travel essentials in case you end up stuck in traffic for longer: a comfortable blanket, drinks, snacks, and a power bank.
Please note that when entering Germany (for example after your ski trip), you may need to expect a longer waiting time at border controls.
Don’t forget to check the toll regulations of the countries along the way to your ski resort. You can find more information about tolls in Austria in our guide.
