From next weekend, the semester break begins in Vienna and Lower Austria. Many families use the start of the holidays for a skiing weekend or a trip abroad. This travel rush is also noticeable on the roads. From next Friday (30/01/2026), you should expect heavier traffic and long tailbacks. The risk of traffic jams increases especially in the Vienna area and on access roads to the ski resorts.
However, it’s not only the start of the holidays that will lead to more traffic, but also the Ski World Cup in Schladming. It also takes place around the same time (27/01–28/01/2026) and will further increase congestion on the main routes.
You should try to avoid the following main routes during your journey:
In general, it is recommended that you travel outside the typical peak travel times and, if possible, consider using public transport.
For the Ski World Cup, many routes towards the Enns Valley are prone to traffic jams. The return journey falls on the same days as the start of the holidays, so delays are also possible, especially on the Enns Valley Road (B320), around Schladming, and on the Pyhrn Motorway (A9).
If you would like to travel from Vienna to the Ski World Cup, you should use public transport. Schladming train station is very well connected to the rail network. In addition, you can also use bus services and shuttle buses from larger car parks and nearby towns.
