Anyone driving southbound on the A93 today (October 6) and on several other dates should expect heavy traffic due to truck metering (“Blockabfertigung”). In this article, we’ll tell you on which days you should plan for extra travel time.
If you’re not tied to school holidays and decide to extend your summer a bit by heading south in autumn, you should first check which days it’s better to avoid using the A93 between Brannenburg and Kiefersfelden.
The direct route to Austria and Italy often turns into a traffic trap. The reason is that just beyond the border in Austria, heavy goods vehicles are metered near Kufstein-Nord towards Innsbruck. The metering (“Blockabfertigung”) applies only to trucks heavier than 7.5 tons. Alternative routes are prohibited for trucks in Austria.
The problem is that this stretch has a lot of heavy truck traffic. Since these vehicles are released in blocks, traffic jams form — sometimes backing up into Germany along the A93 and even onto the A8. As a result, holiday travelers should also expect travel time losses and traffic congestion on this very popular route.
The Austrian federal state has made truck metering a permanent regulation. This measure is intended to control truck traffic on the Inntal Autobahn (A12) in Austria and prevent overloading in Tyrol.
On days when metering is active, only about 250 to 300 trucks per hour are allowed to cross the border at Kufstein/Kiefersfelden. Once the maximum number is reached, the remaining trucks must wait until space becomes available again. This causes traffic jams on the A93 toward Austria that can stretch all the way back to the A8. Vehicles under 7.5 tons can travel normally, but the waiting trucks on the right lane also lead to traffic disruptions and travel delays on the other lanes.
