The border between Austria and Slovakia extends over 106.7 kilometers. There are several road border crossings, a ferry crossing, and an highway crossing between Slovakia and Austria.
Within the EU, border controls have largely been abolished. Therefore, in many cases, you can cross the Austrian-Slovak border without any controls. Exceptions include international sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup or major political events, as well as occasions related to the internal security of the countries. In such cases, border controls will still be conducted.
There are numerous road crossings between Austria and Slovakia. The most well-known are:
Due to border controls and traffic at toll stations, there may be waiting times, especially at the Kittsee highway border crossing. Depending on the waiting time, a detour via the Berg road crossing can be taken instead.
The border crossing between Angern an der March (AT) and Zahorská Ves (SVK) is crossed by ferry. Motorcycles, cars, trucks, even trailers, and of course, passengers are transported by ferry over the Morava, a side stream of the Danube. In fact, the short crossing of the Morava is much cheaper than the highway toll fees. However, to move quickly through both countries, a digital vignette is still required.
The following section provides an overview of whether you need a vignette and whether there are any specific toll sections.
To use the Austrian highways and expressways, a toll in the form of a vignette is required. Therefore, vehicles up to 3.5 tons need a (digital) vignette. You can choose from various validity periods depending on the vehicle class for your journey. Here you can find more information and purchase the appropriate vignette.
However, there are also toll-free highways. Ways to bypass the vignette requirement can be found in our article "Bypass Tolls".
Note that for vehicles over 3.5 tons GVM, the vignette requirement is waived, and instead, a distance-based toll must be paid. This performance-based toll is calculated using a GO-Box, which you must install in your vehicle for data collection.
In addition to the vignette and distance-based tolls, there are certain special toll roads in Austria that you should be aware of during your trip. Additional fees apply for using these special toll roads.
Here you can find more information about the various tunnels and certain mountain passes.
Slovakia also operates an electronic toll system on its highways and expressways.
The distance-based toll must be paid if your vehicle exceeds 3.5 tons GVM (motorhomes are excluded). This means that buses and trucks must pay a distance-based electronic toll, which is calculated using the HU-GO System (electronic toll collection). Thus, the distance-based toll replaces the vignette. Therefore, you no longer need a vignette.
