Since summer holidays end simultaneously in six Austrian federal states (Carinthia, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol, and Vorarlberg) and school starts again in five German states, a traffic-heavy weekend is expected.
About 2.2 million students are affected, including 1.7 million from Austria and about 1.1 million from Germany, who will be traveling home. As a result, Saturday (09/06/2025) will become the main traffic jam day. Nevertheless, significant delays may also occur on Sunday afternoon.
According to ARBÖ, the following routes will be particularly affected:
In addition, there will be waiting times at the borders, for example at the Karawanken Tunnel, Spielfeld/Sentilj (Slovenia), Nickelsdorf/Hegyeshalom (Hungary), Kufstein/Kiefersfelden, Walserberg and Suben.
Besides the end of holidays and school start, Austria will face Cyprus Saturday evening in the Raiffeisen Arena in Linz. Up to 16,500 fans are expected, most of whom will arrive by car, further worsening the traffic situation. Due to the World Cup football match, the following roads will be particularly affected:
As if that were not enough, the “European Bike Week” will also take place from September 2 to 9, expecting up to 100,000 visitors. Several roads will be closed due to the parade:
So if you plan to be on the motorway this weekend, make sure to check the traffic situation beforehand. It’s best not to travel during peak times, but rather very early in the morning or late in the evening.
