With the start of the Easter holidays, an increased traffic jam volume is expected. While the ADAC Südbayern is already anticipating traffic jams, the airports in Munich and Nuremberg are preparing for a higher number of passengers.
The ADAC is particularly expecting heavier traffic on Friday, as many families will use the last school day as a travel day. Additionally, Holy Thursday (April 17) is traditionally a day with increased traffic. Besides Bavaria, the Easter holidays will begin for seven other federal states over the weekend. And it doesn’t stop there, as the Easter holidays will also start in Austria, Switzerland, and Belgium.
It is forecasted that there will be traffic jams mainly around Munich and on the highways heading towards Austria, Italy, and Switzerland. A higher volume of travel is also expected on the Fernpass. Additionally, there is an increased risk of traffic jams on the A3 between Würzburg and Nuremberg and the A6 from Nuremberg towards Pilsen.
You should especially keep an eye on the traffic reports for the Brenner Autobahn! Travelers who intend to use the Brenner Autobahn on their way to Italy should expect significant delays. Even without the construction site at Luegbrücke, the Brenner Autobahn was a hotspot for traffic jams during holiday periods, but the ongoing construction work will make the traffic jam risk even greater. Although a two-lane configuration is planned for the bridge at the start of the holidays to counteract the increased traffic, long traffic queues are inevitable. If you are not traveling directly next weekend to the south for a holiday, you will have better chances of avoiding the traffic jams. By Monday, the traffic jam forecasts are much more reassuring.
However, it's not only on the roads that increased traffic is expected; airports must also prepare for more passengers. Nuremberg Airport is expecting around 215,000 passengers during the Easter holidays (a quarter more than the previous year). In contrast, Munich Airport has not yet released specific figures but is also preparing for a higher volume of travel.
