What is the Bosruck Tunnel?

The Bosruck Tunnel is a toll section on the Phyrn highway A9 (Wels - Graz) in the center (of Styria) in Austria. Specifically, the Bosruck Tunnel is a railway tunnel with two road tunnels passing under the Bosruck mountain. Depending on the route, the Bosruck Tunnel is crossed on the way from Switzerland, Liechtenstein, or Germany towards Hungary.

The Bosruck Tunnel road tunnel is a total length of 5,509 meters (5.5 km), with two tubes (construction of the second tube started in 2009) that mostly run parallel to the approximately 80 years older railway tunnel. It has been fully completed since 2013. As of September 15, 2023, the Bosruck Tunnel and the Gleinalm Tunnel are also barrier-free:

• The passage lanes have been widened from 2.3 meters to over 3 meters to accommodate larger cars, campers, and trailers more easily.
• The digital toll lane is even barrier-free. So, if you already have a digital toll, you can pass through the toll station faster this way.
• The new signage at the toll stations clearly indicates where owners of a digital toll and those without a toll sticker have to go.
• The lane for the digital toll is already colored green 200 meters before the actual toll station to prevent last-minute lane changes before the toll station.
• Driving through without a ticket will result in high fines.

You can bypass the Bosruck Tunnel by taking the state road 320 in Altenmarkt im Pongau (formerly federal highway B 146 and B 308), which later becomes the E651 (european road), and head towards Liezen. From Liezen, continue through Selzthal. However, keep in mind that while bypassing a toll tunnel may save you the toll fee, it usually results in a significantly longer drive and, consequently, higher fuel costs. Whether bypassing the tunnel is worth it depends on individual circumstances.
