Travel diary: Day 2

Day 2: Riegersburg and Gamlitz in the Picturesque South Styria

My second day took me away from the urban grandeur of Vienna to the picturesque landscapes of South Styria. My first destination was the impressive Riegersburg, which majestically sits atop a volcanic rock and tells a fascinating history. From a distance, I could already see the imposing fortress, which has been expanded over the centuries and today stands as a proud symbol of the region.

The drive to the castle was an experience in itself. I crossed gentle hills, surrounded by lush vineyards and idyllic villages. Upon arriving at Riegersburg, I felt as though I had been transported to another time. I decided to join a guided tour that took me through the ancient walls and mysterious corridors of the castle. Every room, every corner of the castle seemed to tell its own story, from brave knights to court intrigues and the fortress's strategic importance in the region's history.

After soaking in the historical atmosphere of Riegersburg, I continued my journey toward Gamlitz. This charming village in South Styria is known for its excellent wines and picturesque landscapes. Here, I wanted to explore the famous Wine Road and, of course, sample some local wine varieties.

The Wine Road led me through breathtaking landscapes, past countless wineries and cozy Buschenschanks, where you can enjoy regional wines and traditional Styrian dishes. I stopped at a small, family-run winery, where the owners warmly welcomed me. During a wine tasting in the open air, I tried various white wines typical of the region. Every sip was a delight, full of the fruitiness and freshness of the grapes that grow in this sun-drenched region.

After the wine tasting, I enjoyed a late lunch at the nearby Buschenschank Pölzl. The menu featured local delicacies such as Brettljause with homemade bread, bacon, cheese, and spreads. I sat down under the vines, enjoyed the delicious food, and gazed over the vast vineyards.

Filled with new impressions and the taste of Styria on my tongue, I ended my second day. South Styria had enchanted me with its beauty, wines, and hospitality. With anticipation for the further adventures of my journey, I wrapped up the day.
