What is a Route Toll/Special Toll/Video Toll?
The Special Toll is referred to as Route Toll (formerly Video Toll) in Austria (Note: it can be confused with the route-based toll). The route toll is charged for certain routes that are not subject to a vignette requirement or a route-based toll. This means that even if you have purchased a vignette for using highways or have already paid your route-based toll with the help of the GO-Box, there are sections of the route where an additional fee (special toll) applies. The special toll thus applies to everyone who wishes to use these specific routes.
Who has to pay the Route Toll/Special Toll?
All vehicle owners who wish to use a special toll route must pay the route toll. Vehicles with a (digital) vignette pay an additional amount on top of their vignette and must acquire a pass for using the special toll route (on-site or digitally with us). Vehicles that are subject to a route-based toll do not need to purchase a pass for the route toll. The amount is automatically accounted for when driving on the route through the GO-Box.
Which routes are subject to the Route Toll/Special Toll?
Special toll routes are often tunnels or mountain passes in Austria, as maintaining these routes incurs higher costs. Therefore, if you pass a route toll, you will need to pay an additional fee. This fee is a flat rate, similar to the vignette, which varies depending on the vehicle class (over or under 3.5 tons gross weight). Additionally, it is important to note that most special toll routes can be reached via vignette-required access roads or route-based access roads. Hence, you should always, regardless of the special toll route, acquire a vignette or a GO-Box.
The following tunnels and mountain passes are special toll routes. Therefore, you need to pay an additional fee to use them:
Tunnels exempt from the special toll
The following tunnels are not special toll routes, meaning no additional fees apply beyond your already purchased vignette or the payment of the route-based toll. Therefore, the Landecker Tunnel and the Pfändertunnel are exceptions, as most tunnels and mountain passes in Austria are special toll routes.
Note that a vignette is required for the Landecker Tunnel, while the vignette requirement for motorcycles and cars does not apply for the Pfändertunnel.
